"I am not a camper in any sense of the word… but to drift along in this fashion… passing sandy beaches and on either side, the sharply creased mountain sides, fragrant with vanilla-scented ponderosa pines, was completely tranquilizing....It was true that the food was delicious, the amount of work expected from us nonexistent, the accommodations almost luxurious, the scenery unbelievable...."
Tama Janowitz - Bon Appetit Magazine

"White water and red wines are the stars of two expeditions... from Idaho's Salmon River Outfitters. Spend days shooting the rapids and nights sampling West Coast vintages with dinner."

Seasons on "the River of No Return"
The Salmon River experiences a moderate seasonal transition from the first trip in early summer through the last trip in the autumn. Here's what you can expect:

Average Temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit
Month Low High
June 50 80
July 53 85
August 56 88
September 52 82

Early Summer
Wildlife/Wildflowers
June 14 and 22
Nature at her prime: this is the best time of year to see moose, bighorn rams, mountain goats, black bear and other typically higher-ranging wildlife. The canyon is lush green, sprouting colorful new wildflowers. Natural high water flows speed our pace downriver, leaving more time for hikes and casual afternoons in camp.
Summer
Swimming/Sunbathing
June 30, July 8, 16, 24, August 1, 9, 17, 25
The long warm days of summer: enjoy a full day with over 16 hours of light. On river, you may choose the relaxing ride of an oar-boat, team participation in a paddle-boat, or the individual challenge of an inflatable kayak. Each day we'll take short hikes. Expect to see bighorn sheep, otters and eagles.
Autumn
Indian Summer
September 2 and 10
Autumn means solitude: fall colors, warm days and crisp nights make this a special time on the Salmon. Trout fishing is at its best as the water temperature begins to cool. The river's pace is leisurely and other boaters are scarce.

Inexperienced campers / non-swimmers
This is true of many passengers. You'll discover that river trips provide the most comfortable style of wilderness camping, and in the unlikely event of an unplanned "swim," our top-quality U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets will keep you afloat.

Family Groups and Charter Rates
We offer discounts for children and groups of 12 or more. Charter trips (up to 24 persons) may have arrangements made for additional nights at riverside guest lodges, extra days on the river, or flights out for shorter trips.
