Bon Appetit-August 1998 by Tama Janowitz

I am not a camper in any sense of the word, but to drift along in this fashion, passing sandy beaches and on either side, the sharply creased mountain sides, fragrant with vanilla-scented ponderosa pines, was completely tranquilizing.

Overhead, eagles circled from time to time, and we passed mountain sheep that had come down to drink at the water's edge.

It was true that the food was delicious, the amount of work expected from us nonexistent, the accommodations almost luxurious, the scenery unbelievable.

In the morning, as we set out once more, it occurred to me that this was the first trip I had ever taken where the voyage was the destination.

Ultimately it was that kind of trip, a trip unlike most in which we all got what we had been hoping for.
